I've been a lifelong customer of Waterstone's and sort of taken them for granted as an institution. It only occurred to me the other day how sad I would be if they closed, and what a loss that would be to the nation. Think about it: have you ever been to a Waterstone's and had rude or unhelpful staff? Or a cluttered, untidy store? Or has it always been full of interesting finds, on the shelves and behind the counters? I can't remember a single bad experience in a Waterstone's anywhere in the country, going back over 30 years or more. I've lost count of the impromptu chats with staff and other customers that have changed the shape of my life, and of the chance finds and recommendations that have shaped my mind. And there's always a sense somehow of "coming home". The little hand-written reviews on the shelves mean more to me than any number of blogs or acres of column space. It's run by readers, for readers. They know you, and they want the same thing we do - a world where people read more, think more and talk more. That's the opposite of what the online world wants, which is to keep you frightened, angry and distracted. Don't take them for granted: keep magic in the high street. Investing in books is investing in yourself, and will never be wrong. Stay connected to wonder.
Worst online shopping experience ever!
I placed a single order for four items. The items were due to arrive in three separate packages, meaning I had to wait in my home on multiple days for delivery of this single order from a single company. To make matters worse, the first package arrived with a book that had a huge scratch gouged into the back cover. So now I have a trip to the post office to send it back and another day's wait in my house for it to be delivered. The fourth item from my order still hasn't been processed, let alone dispatched, five days after ordering. I have given up. Online shopping is supposed to be more convenient, but with Waterstones, it's the antithesis of convenience. No regard for their customers whatsoever, and zero quality control in shipping damaged goods! Remainder of order cancelled; account deleted!

I still go into my local branch in East Grinstead in West Sussex. I like to look around at the books current. Though I don't buy here. I find it particularly useful as a time killer, if I've got excess time to kill where I've missed a bus. Looking around at books I at least feel as though I'm not wasting time. I often see something I will buy later online, as I far do really prefer shopping through my online Waterstones account. I don't think they much like me looking at books, and not buying from them in my local Waterstones branch in EG. They really give me the impression of not being the friendliest staff there honestly. Especially one of the ladies, who seems to speak to me in a rather patronising fashion. When I'm usually coming from the supermarket and loaded down with food shopping bags so it is purely convenient as a ten minutes or so distraction from my heavy carried shopping before getting the bus home. I've learned lots looking over past weeks. Saw a nice book upon the history of East West Spying. Found out Peter Benchly's JAWS from 1974 is still published! And they still have new stories of Sharpe's Rifles Naploleonic War stories. That I didn't know of. Liked the little tiny grey mouse thing I saw in the gift section. But found it is meant as a sort of cleaning cloth of some kind, just shaped like a mouse. Bit expensive at £7.99 to buy for my cat as a mouse toy. What I first thought it was on seeing it. I also looked today at the shopping bags. I felt they were all rather disappointingly very feminine market aimed in their designs. Rather than more masculine ones. I ran out of time to look today to see if there's any US spy fiction books by a writer named Radfield, I think his name was. I must look it up on Google. He wrote the famous spy novel Five Days of the Condor. That was made as the hit famous Hollywood Robert Redford film Three Days of the Condor. I'd like to read that book. That's on my book wants list to get, definitely.
Shocking abusive language from manager
I went into the Hayes store within Next at Lombardy retail shopping park and the male manager was swearing on the shop floor which is totally unacceptable f***ing this F***ing that and f***ing C**t, you can not use language like this absolutely disgusting behaviour, on top of it he was not helpful. I definitely won’t be going back to that store and he needs training in customer service and brush up on his manners on speaking nicely to customers.

Absolutely fantastic store, the colleagues in store have such amazing knowledge of their products and I almost walked away with the whole store.
Customer service was great
Customer service was great, had an issue with a UK versus US address and they were quick to find the issue and fix it and hopefully no more missent orders!

Amazing customer support and fast shipping. Books were shipped quickly, one book was delayed, and I got a quick and thoughtful resolution from customer support. I will definitely shop here again for my books.

Outstanding and excellent
I had received a book that was slightly damaged, returned it for a replacement, received that within a week of getting the book originally. Customer service has been outstanding as always. I love shopping with Waterstones both online and in store. I have never had a bad experience.
Waterstone's Plus Card
Had a problem with my Waterstones Plus card. In store they said I had point but online I couldn't see this. Problem was solved really promptly by Cecilia and I'm happy now!

Pre-Order Dispatch Issue Resolved Alyssa was a great help she is a legend, an icon, she is the moment! My pre-order item hadn't shipped out yet and I was worried because other people had already received their orders for the same item. Alyssa was super quick to respond and organised another store to send one out to me ASAP. She has been the biggest help!

I had a book arrive damaged and the customer service team replied in a timely manner and shipped me a new copy of the book quickly. I am very impressed with how quick and easy it was to correct the issues, especially as I am an international customer. I would highly recommend shopping with Waterstones.
